How to resize Mac partition| Guide to Increase/ Decrease Mac Volume

A Mac user who has recently switched to Lion must have faced the scenario where one needs to create multiple partitions in Mac drive. The Mac disk utility is an excellent application to handle all the Mac disk related issues.

What tasks can be done with Mac disk utility?
  1. Creation and conversion of disk images into Mac readable format
  2. Mounting and unmounting of disks (both hard disks and removable disks)
  3. Checking the S.M.A.R.T status of Mac disk
  4. Disk formatting, creating partitions

From above points, it can easily be concluded that almost all the Mac disk partition related tasks can be done with disk utility but still there are some exceptions with its ability. Some of them are given here:
  1. One cannot use disk utility to hide/reveal a Mac partition.
  2. Automatic shifting of all the free spaces at one location.

The interface of disk utility is not very friendly for many newbies and that is also one of the reasons for using third party application. This fact has been been experienced by many users of Stellar Partition Manager for Mac.

Can disk utility shift Mac partitions?

I have a PowerPC Mac with Mac OS X 10.4. I tried to create a dual boot disk on my Mac. The total size of my Mac disk is 250 GB. The Mac OSX was installed in 100 GB of space and rest 150 GB was free. I installed Windows 7 with bootcamp and allotted it 80 GB of space on the disk. Everything was well except one thing. I was left with two free spaces, sandwiched with Windows 7 volume. Here is the layout of my hard disk:
  1. Mac OS X (10.4) = 100 GB
  2. Free Space = 35 GB
  3. Windows 7 = 80 GB
  4. Free space = 35 GB
I wanted only three partitions on my Mac drive but unfortunately, created four. So, I had to merge the two free spaces and create a new partition of 70 GB.

Unfortunately, the Apple's disk utility doesn't show any option to merge / shift these free spaces to bring them together. So, finally, I had to search for a third party Mac tool to create a new partition from free space.

I found the Stellar partition manager for Mac which can :
  1. Create new partition
  2. Resize partition
  3. Shift Partition
  4. Hide / Reveal Mac partition
  5. Format partition
  6. Delete Mac partition
So, it was very easy with Stellar partition tool to bring the free spaces ( 35 GB each ) together to create a new partition of 70 GB. Now, I have three partition on my drive:
  1. Mac OS X (10.4) = 100 GB
  2. Windows 7 = 80 GB
  3. New Partition = 70 GB
Apart from this I can also hide my partition and stop it being accessed by my daughter as it stores some very important files. Although there are so many other Mac applications to manage partitions in Mac but the features like :
  1. Interesting GUI
  2. Low price
  3. Fast performance
  4. Data safety
made me lean towards it. It is to suggest our readers not to believe blindly about any application but first try this application and check if it can serve you to manage your Mac partitions effectively.

Need a partition manager tool for Mac

Working with Mac doesn't mean that your choice is limited to few programs only. But rather you find a wide range of Mac tools that are completely compatible with the latest versions of operating systems.
Heres the experience of Mr. Yosmen from Russia.....

My first experience in Mac was with Mac OS 9.0. At that phase of computer life there we very less options available in the market. Secondly, the available tools were very costly. So, doing any personalization was not very handy at that time.

I remember the day when I needed to increase the size of my Mac partition. I searched from earth to sky but, all in vain. All that I did is initialized my hard drive and repartitioned it. This killed lots of my data and a huge financial loss.

But, now a days the scenario has entirely changed. A few days ago when I again needed a mac partition manager for my daughter's Mac machine, I got so many programs. Its being a customer's market (tough competition) the mac programs are available at very low cost.

I just googled for Mac partition manager and found a partition management tool from Stellar. I downloaded it for free and tested the trial version. It was great and exactly the same which I was searching for.

The Stellar partition manager is a great tool to
  1. Create a new partition from scattered free spaces
  2. Shift partitions upward or downward without any data loss.
  3. Resize mac partition without any data loss.
  4. Facilitates complete erasing of data from a partition with the Format option.
  5. Help to secure a partition by the Hiding it from unauthorized access.

I registered this tool for just $ 39 and enjoying a happy Mac life. Thanks to Stellar mac partition manager software.

Failure of Mac partition process- a cause of data loss

--> In Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard, the Drive Utility tool is able to resize your hard drive partitions or repartition a drive without erasing stored data. In new version of Mac OS X operating system, namely Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. You can upgrade to it from your Leopard system. However, some beta software does not work in Snow Leopard. Thus, disk repartitioning may be required to create a new partition and install Snow Leopard on it.

For perfect functioning of your system after disk repartitioning, the process of disk repartitioning should complete successfully. In case, the process is terminated due to any reason, like low disk space and system crash, you may not be able to access existing partitions and data. This behavior leads to significant data loss and calls for Mac data recovery.
Backup Your Data Before You Proceed for Mac Disk Repartitioning

You are highly recommended that you should not mess up with actual partitioning structure on your Mac OS X hard drive without creating a valid backup of your valuable data first. The partitioning process may go wrong in some situations and problems may take place, calling for data recovery Mac to be fixed.

It is quite possible to lose access of your business critical data in case of disk repartitioning process failure. So before performing the disk partitioning operation on your Mac OS X hard disk, you should make sure that your backup is valid and updated. If you repartition the hard drive without an absolute backup, it can be very risky.

How to Repartition a Mac Hard Drive?
To repartition a hard drive using Disk Utilities, follow the underwritten steps:
Launch Disk Utility.
Select the hard drive to repartition, in the list it shows.
Drag corner of partition box for resizing it.
Click '+' button to add new volume.
It prompts for confirmation. Confirm it.

This way, you can easily repartition of your Mac hard drive. But if you are not comfortable with disk utility, you can opt for some third party tool like Stellar Partition manager to resize Mac partition.

But, what if you do not have a backup and the process fails? It causes serious data loss and Mac recovery becomes need of hour.

Recovery is possible using powerful and advanced third-party applications, known as Mac recovery software. They are powerful enough to perfectly and safely recovery all lost data from Mac OS X hard drive.

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery is the most efficient and useful utility in all data loss situations. The software recovers data from HFS, HFS+, HFSX, HFS Wrapper, and FAT file system volumes. It is designed for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.5 Leopard, 10.4 Tiger, and 10.3.9 Panther.
