How to Create Delete Resize & Format Mac Lion partition while switching to Snow Leopard

The terms like resize, create, delete and format Mac partition has always been associated with Mac Lion or Mac OS X 10.7 , since the release of this new Mac operating system. Users, whether a newbie or tech savvy , find it safe to have a new partition or volume for Mac Lion. There are many reasons to modify Mac Lion partition and some of them are:

  1. If a user wants to create new volumes in Mac disk then the existing partition (Mac Lion volume ) needs to be resized.
  2. There are Mac users who have created a dual boot drive comprised of Mac Snow Leopard and Mac Lion. Some of them are not satisfied with Mac Lion and want to format Mac OSX 10.7.
  3. Many mac users find their machines running slower after upgrading to Mac Lion (due to any reason) and now they want to remove Mac Lion partition.

So, the scenarios mentioned above, lead us to have a partition manager for Mac Lion. Stellar partition manager is one such application which is capable to handle all the modifications in Mac partitions.

Here are the options available in Stellar partition manager

1.Resize Mac partition - Partition Manager helps to resize Mac volume in few easy steps and that too without any risk of data loss. A very useful Mac utility which doesn't require any expertise to run it. Here are the steps to resize partition in Mac:

  • Click the 'Resize' button and move , the 'Resize Partition' window appears. Move the slider and specify the required volume size. Click 'OK' and the resizing process starts.
  • Once the operation is completed , the resized partition gets mounted on the desktop.

Mac partition – Resize , Create and Delete with Mac tool

The most common tool used to manage Mac partitions is Apple's Disk Utility. It was updated with Mac OSX. In prior versions of Mac OS ie; prior to Mac OS X, the functionality and features of Disk Utility could be found in the Disk First Aid application. As far as partitioning and formatting Mac drive is concerned, these tasks were accomplished through Drive Setup.
I have Mac OSX 10.6. and 40 GB hard drive with only two volumes – Bootable(Mac OS)- 26 GB and Non bootable(Data Drive)- 10 GB. I tried to ceate a new partition in bootable section but it took too much of time to understand the application and get my work done. Secondly, it warned me with a message that my data could be at risk. Although its free but not so easy to understand and use.

So, I used another Mac tool to manage partition – Stellar partition manager. Its great with an awesome interface. When I selected the drive it prompted me a message to create a bootable DVD to operate at main drive. That I did with the same application. After booting with this DVD, I can easily create new partition at Mac OS. Now I have three partitions on my Mac wih 20 GB, 10 GB and 10 GB of size.
Of course I had to pay $ 39.00 for Stellar partition manager but now I have an excellent Mac tool to resize , add and delete Mac partitions without any data loss. The extra features with this application are the options to hide or reveal a partition.

How to Resize Partitions on Mac hard drive – Heres the answer

The Disk Utility version which comes with OS X 10.5 has some very attractive features specially the ability to add, delete, and resize Mac partitions on hard drive. Its very easy to increase the partition size , delete mac partition, and to split a drive into multiple partitions. The user can do it with Disk Utility, without losing the data.

As far as creating a new partition is concerned, the Mac disk utility is the best option. But, if a user wants to ...

1.Shift Mac partitions
2.Merge free Mac spaces to create new partition

Then he needs to search for some third party Mac maintenance tool. There is a software specialized for this maintening Mac partitions- Stellar Partition Manager.

Let me explain my words with an example:

Suppose My hard drive has a total size of 100 GB. There are three partitions os 30 GB each. The partitions are named like : P1,F1,P2,F2,P3.

Here P1, P2 and P3 are partitions of 30 GB each and F1 and F2 are free spaces of 5 GB each. Here , although I have 10 GB of free space at my hard drive but I can't use it. To sole the issue I need to shift F1 and F2 and put them together to merge them as a single drive P1,P2,F1,F2,P3.

With disk utility, its not possible, But I can do it with Stellar Partition manager. Its an easy to use Mac maintenance tool carrying all the features of Mac Disk Utility (create , delete ans resize mac partitions) plus many additional features also. The screenshot of this Mac utility software is given below.

In the above screen shot we can merge free space0, freespace1 , freespace2 and freespace3 together to make a new partition.
